An attack carried out on Wednesday by the Islamic State group near Iraq's border with Syria left nine Iraqi Shia militia fighters dead and over 20 injured, an Iraqi military officer said.

"Nine fighters were killed and 23 others injured in the attack," the officer told Turkey's state run Anadolu news agency on condition of anonymity.

ISIS fighters attacked a post of the People's Mobilization Forces (PMF, also referred to as Hashd al-Shaabi) north of Al Waleed border crossing with Syria, the officer said, adding that 11 IS militants were also killed in clashes with the militia fighters.

The pro-government Hashd al-Shaabi was created in 2014 to fight against IS in Iraq. It is composed of predominantly Shiite fighters.
