An immediate agreement between Damascus and Syrian opposition on the constitution and the transition period is unrealistic, but the United Nations hopes for rapprochement of positions, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said in an interview with RIA Novosti.

"It would be important if we were able to have both sides sitting together, not only through the UN intermediation. And if in different dossiers that are on the table – the fight against terrorism, the transition, the future constitution... – there would be, I would say, a number of first concrete steps for an understanding, I am not asking for a total agreement immediately," Guterres said.

"I think it would not be realistic. But to have some first concrete steps in which the two sides will start the movement making their positions closer. Because until now, as you know, the positions have been completely opposed," he said.
